Sustainable Tourism Development-Brisbane Case
From the analysis of the case, sustainable tourism aims to address efficient use the environmental resources, socio-cultural authenticity respect and long term economic activities. However, tourism development will never be totally sustainable. The efforts to sustain one aspect will be at the expense of the other aspect. This research paper seeks to evaluate the sustainable tourism development exhibited by the city of Brisbane in Australia. In the analysis the paper aims to answer the question āHow can Brisbane strengthen the development of sustainable tourism products in order to meet the demand from leisure tourists?ā
Brisbane is the Australian third largest city. The location of the city makes it a perfect destination for many international tourists (Australia.Com, 2016). According to Pride (2015) Brisbaneās sophisticated culture and subtropical climate attracts both international and domestic tourists. Upon evaluating the major attractions in Brisbane it comes out clearly that they all in the three components of sustainable tourism developmentĀ (Bowl, 2014). Therefore, in the event of enhancing tourists experience there is likelihood of environmental resources, socio-cultural practice as well as local economy being interfered with.
Car rentals and camper-vans are common travelling facilities in Brisbane (Olivar, 2016). The findings indicate these transportation facilities are the one of the leading air pollutants in Australia. However, the tourist destination can address this problem by acquiring environmentally safe vehicle. Ā This will help in protecting the environment from the harmful gases emitted by the rental cars. Similarly, the destination can strengthen its environmental protection policies to reduce the level environmental destruction resulting from tourism activities
Tourism has been accused for disruption social cultural practice of the local communities. The local communities perceives tourism impacts positively and hence most of the times end ingraining the tourism negative vices in their culture. Similarly, this has been the case in Brisbane. According to Brunet , et al. (2011, p. 246) Bhutan culture has been greatly influenced by tourism. However, this can be gotten rid of by ensuring a well-planned tourism that will not interfere with the community culturesĀ (Morrisson, 2014).
As argued by Brunet , et al., (2001, p. 244) Tourism has been a major booster of the Brisbane economic operations. Besides in the destination, also Australian tourism has been considered as the major economic driver for both the regional and local communities. Therefore, development of tourism industry in Brisbane will have positive impact on the destination economic operations.
