Problem Solution Paper: Racism

Racism is undeniably the top issue among the major social problems in the world. When the term racism is mentioned, various speculations and imaginations arise. We all hold varied views on the matter either laying blames to a specific, individual, institution or governmental organ. In a narrow sense, racism refers to the oppression of a non-white person or a group by a white or a group of whites. A broader view, racism holds more than just oppression. Domination either in the political or economic arena by any race is also a portrayal of racism (Akrami & Araya, 2010). The most popular debate on racism exists between the blacks and whites. Racism is a global problem perpetrated by ignorance that separates people on the basis of skin color and can be addressed through desegregation, legislation, and mass education programs. The ideology of racism was developed by the European scientists during the Atlantic slave trade in the 17th century although the practice was in existence even before (Bonilla-Silva, 2012). The word was coined to differentiate the Europeans from the other people with darker colors, contributing to a racial hierarchy that exists up to date. The supposition that the white color is a representation of supremacy created many debates both in history and in the present. Many blacks tend to view the white society as an institution of racism which ought not to be the case. Racism is rooted in an individual rather than an institution as many people perceive it. White is not a symbol of racism. Furthermore, some blacks too act against their white counterparts, and this could also be qualified as racism. Racism is therefore not a communal ideology, and the white society should not be wholly condemned but only the individuals and institutions perpetrating it.

Many activists have been and are still pushing for the institution of racial equality in the modern societies. Protests against racial injustices and discriminations are a popular phenomenon. The affected countries are too oblivious. All nations need to reunite, and top fighting within themselves as this devours the entire country (Akrami & Araya, 2010). Unity is crucial for the survival of every country. Appreciating the minority and treating them equally just like any other person is the only way to stop internal divisions.

When people live together the prejudices that they hold against one another melt away (Simmons, 2011). Desegregation offers an avenue for all the races to enjoy similar rights and privileges. In the case of addressing racism, universal learning institutions and curriculums should be created. Children should be made to learn and do group work together. The existence different learning institutions creates an implication to the learners that a certain racial group is superior to the other. Similar working conditions should also be offered for all races. The interaction in various social institutions helps the various races to learn how to co-exist in a similar environment.

Basically, racism occurs as a result of misunderstandings between races (Bonilla-Silva, 2012). Communication and integration boost mutual understanding; that all races are extraordinary. Victims should speak out about their experiences and condemn such happenings. People who have friends with negative ideas against a certain race should educate their friends against the notion. Both governmental and non-governmental organizations can conduct informative cultural meetings and have speeches from all races. Extensive communication will create a common understanding between the involved races. All citizens should be made to understand that race is not an inequality or inferiority but rather a biological condition.

The legal approach is considered the most efficient in addressing the race-related issues. It finds much application than any other method in the modern states (Pew Research Center, 2017). However, it has not been effective owing to the fact that the top officials in the government institutions are racist. Laws should be set to protect the interests of the minority races. Those who go against the set rules should be made to undergo severe punishments to pay for their evil deeds. Racial discrimination will decrease as people perpetrating it would fear the attached legal consequences. The best solution in solving the problems associated with racism is through conducting mass education programs. This is the same method that was used by Luther King, the leader of the African-American Civil Rights Movement, a humanitarian and an activist. There are modern activists just like Martin Luther, but their approach is much different from King’s. Although going to the streets does help, the results might just be short-lived. A better approach could be writing speeches and article spreading the idea that everyone deserves respect despite their skin color. The approach displayed much success in Luther’s time, and it is the only way to create peaceful and harmonious societies.

The mass education program might require much funding and time, but the outcomes will be worth the efforts applied. Many people view racism solely as a political phenomenon which can only be addressed through political measures (Pew Research Center, 2017). The coercive legal measures though helpful may not be much effective. People ought to drop racism not because they fear the law but rather because their conscience tells them that it is wrong.

In conclusion, racism is a demanding problem that ought to be solved with urgency. Otherwise, the modern societies will grow more unstable and unequal.  Racism is a two-way traffic in which both the perpetrators and the victims should play a role in ending the problem. The victims instead of sitting back and watching the injustices vested on them should speak out to create understanding. The perpetrators, on the other hand, should be ready to embrace change to end the old problem.
