Namratha Oil Refineries Case Study
The first Case Study is based on Namratha Oil Refineries Pvt. Ltd.: Tackling Oil Giveaway, found in your
HBSP Coursepack. You must purchase the case study.
1. Analyze the company using the information from the case study and also from online sources.
The coconut oil industry in India accounts for a significant amount of the country’s GDP. Researchers estimate that by 2025, coconut oil producers globally will have a value of $8,403.3 million. The overall market volume of the product will reach 6,569.8 kilotons by 2025 (Market Research Future, 2019). Coconut oil plays a significant role in enhancing the health and wellness of consumers because it contains Vitamin E, antioxidants, and lauric acid.
2. Is there any information available about how common this kind of problem is? What
competitors does the company have? How large is the industry? How was it affected by the
Covid-19 virus?
India’s coconut oil industry has been adversely affected by the Corona Virus 2019 pandemic. The country’s lockdown in March 2020 resulted in the loss of revenue and jobs for coconut oil producing firms, such as Namratha Oil Refineries Pvt Ltd (NORPL) (Bahree, 2020). And the firm’s competitors, such as Tejaswani Coconut Producer Company, Malappuram Coconut Producers Company Limited, and Koyilandy Coconut Farmers Producer Company (Theerkhapathy & Chandrakumarmangalam, 2014). NORPL faces several production challenges, such as oil giveaways that are common in the industry. An analysis of the issue may help in deducing the appropriate action that NORPL’s executives, such as Madhav Kumar, may implement to improve production efficiency.3. Perform a SWOT analysis on the business. What do you conclude from this?
In March 2017, Kumar was tasked by NORPL to determine why the firm had a high rate of process loss in the form of oil giveaways by senior managers. A Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats (SWOT) analysis of the business is essential for the revelation of NORPL’s operational issues and possible areas of improvement. According to a case study written by Dhaigude and colleagues (2019), NORPL’s strengths were the firm’s renowned customer satisfaction that was upheld by the consistent production of high-quality products. Additionally, NORPL manufactured purely organic coconut oil that had a distinctive taste and aroma. The firm’s weaknesses may be viewed through the brainstorming session’s feedback that Kumar received from junior supervisors. NORPL’s weaknesses include outdated equipment that constantly required repairs and constrained budgetary allocations for spare parts (Namugenyi et al., 2019). The organization’s opportunities include the ability to meet production targets on fully functional days, reduced cost of production, and constant access to raw materials. NORPL’s threats include the absence of skilled workers to operate machinery, the use of obsolete technologies that result in overfilling, improper record-keeping of essential processes, poor quality spare parts, tight and tight, and unreasonable schedules. The SWOT analysis implies that NORPL has to improve on its weaknesses and threats to enhance its full potential.
4. Perform a Pareto analysis of the filling process. Can you identify the main problem area?
A Pareto analysis may also help in identifying the main problem that the organization experiences (Perera & Navaratne, 2016). From NORPL’s documents, the company’s filling process may be analyzed as below:
Pouch lines | Wide-Mouth Lines | Narrow Mouth Lines | Total | |
Actual Quantity of Oil Filled | 286.982 | 134.3216 | 57.0684 | 478.372 |
Quantity of Oil to be Filled as Per specification | 284 | 134 | 57 | 475 |
The giveaway amount | 2.982 | 0.3216 | 0.0684 | 3.372 |
Total | 573.964 | 268.6432 | 114.1368 | 956.744 |

5. Perform a TAKT time analysis of the filling process and the Cycle time. What is the bottleneck?
6. Perform a Fishbone analysis. Use this to do a root-cause analysis of the problem. What do you
recommend to do to fix it?
7. What should Kumar do?
In answering these questions, you need to show your reasoning supported by information provided by
your sources. You must use outside references in your research.
The writeup is to be in APA format. Use the APA template available from the Library page in MyUCW
and refer to the APA 7th edition information. You will need a cover page, a one-page introduction
summarizing the case and an abstract. Make sure pages are numbered and references and citations are
done properly. You must cite the case study and the textbook in your references as well. You must cite
your references properly in your paper.
