Language use within CMC Genres

In LING248 this semester we have considered the core linguistic features of four broad genres of computer mediated communication (CMC) – compressed language (SMS, tweet, and hashtag), email, blogs, and image-macro memes. For this assignment, we want you to consider how language use has altered and developed within ONE of these CMC genres. To do this, you will compare at least two (2) sets of early and newer examples of your chosen CMC genre, analysing how, and suggesting why, the linguistic features (including linguistic devices such as hashtags) in the genre have changed. As part of your analysis, you should consider potential shifts in the digital literacy skills of audiences as well as societal and technological factors that may have contributed to these changes.
