How Old Is Too Old?

By Claudia Kalb

When a healthy woman walked into Dr. Richard Paulson’s Los Angeles infertility clinic, he saw no reason to reject her as a patient.  Her medical records indicated that she was 50 years old—five years younger than Paulson’s upper limit for in-vitro candidates—and she passed all the physical tests.  By the time Paulson found out she was actually 60 years old (she had been lying to her previous doctors), the woman was already pregnant with an embryo created from her husband’s sperm and an anonymous (no name) donor’s egg.  At 63, she delivered a normal baby girl and went into the record books as the world’s oldest first-time mom. In Conclusion:
A. Summary statement of your opinion
B. Additional opinionThe article “How Old is Too”  talks about the fertility improvement in old women. Kalb points how doctors are struggling to help old age pregnancies, and there should be an age limit for women who should be allowed to access fertility medication. Statistics less than one hundred pregnancies reported for at the age of fifty and above. The use of technology has helped more women conceive. Doctors have fought to set and enforce the legal age for fertility medication assistance despite this technology improvement. Research has shown that there is a high risk of women older than fifty years having children. These women can develop health problems with diseases such as high blood pressure and diabetes. Also, the relationship between the parent and the child is weak. Should a woman of any age be able to take fertility drugs to have a child? In my opinion, no. There should be an age limit for women to take fertility drugs because of risks involved for mother and child, chances of giving birth are limited, and there are high chances the child born will have to struggle to survive.
