1. Of the four laborers Eddis describes, which does he seem to argue has the worse plight?

Of the four laborers described by Eddis, he seems to argue that the free-willer has the worse plight. There is so much deception that is practiced on the free-willers. Free-willers, from their situation, should be treated with a higher dignity, which they are promised before departure. They are promised that their services will be in high demand. However, the promised fortune is, on most occasions, not achieved. The favorable description contrasted with the impossibility to attain one’s expectations, which mostly leads to being sold once the election period has expired makes the plight of the free-willers the worst.

2. According to Eddis, African slaves have “more comfortable circumstances” than other laborers due to owners needing to maintain their investment. If owners of slaves provide for them–clothing, food, shelter, etc., is the institution of slavery all negative? Why or why not?

Even though the owners of African slaves provide them with some basic needs such as food, shelter and clothing, the motif behind it still implies that slavery is all negative. The provision of these basic needs is tied to ensuring that the investment of the slave owners lasts. Thus, they do not care about the well-being or the dignity of the Africans. If the slave owners had not made an investment towards their acquisition, they would not be willing to take care of them. The “more comfortable circumstances” are just in place to safeguard the interests of the slave owners as opposed to the slaves themselves.

3. What action was taken on behalf of whites following the Stono Rebellion?

4. After the Stono Rebellion, strict and severe actions will be taken towards blacks at large in South Carolina. Why do you think that is?
